Is It Your Way Or The Highway?

In my estimation, there are two types of people in this world; Mayonnaise people and Miracle Whip people.  My Mother will not eat a sandwich without the hefty slather of Miracle Whip and my ex-wife’s love of mayonnaise is SO GREAT she won’t even look at Miracle Whip in the grocery store (let alone buy it).  That’s not, by the way, why she’s my ex-wife.  Yes, my friends, lines have been drawn, positions taken and relationships severed over this condiment rivalry and it’s not getting any better.

Same is the dilemma many of us face as leaders.  Some of us like things one way; like the sweet creamy goodness of Miracle Whip.  Others, another way; perhaps a little more bland (but still effective in adding taste) like that of Mayonnaise.

Unlike the great condiment debate, there is an answer for those who want to get along and not stressed about not getting things exactly how they’d like.

First, appreciate the other’s position.  I grew up in a Miracle Whip house.  I still don’t think a sandwich is a sandwich without the great taste of Miracle Whip.  However, I know not EVERYONE feels the same.  If someone’s opinion is different from your own, appreciate it.  Don’t negate it.  Somethings are right or wrong, they’re just different.

Second, try to come to some common ground.  Unlike my mother’s house, have things that are made with Mayo and others that are made with Miracle Whip.  Through mutual submission by all parties, we have come to agreements on what works best for different situations.  Open lines of communication on what you want, what works best, and what is needed are never bad things.  Keep it open and keep an open mind.

Lastly, try a different option.  If neither Mayo or Miracle Whip work, most in my family will go with Mustard.  We all will hit impasses at times.  At those times it can’t be “my way or the highway” because that will result in no one going anywhere (and maybe getting hungry).  Talk it out and find an alternative.  It might not be your first choice but the question should be, “is it workable?”  If so, go with it  (As a side note: I think “strictly mustard” people aren’t to be trusted).

Although I think I’ve established it, my condiment preference is Miracle Whip.  I don’t think a sandwich tastes “right” without it.  However, through appreciating, talking, and keeping an open mind I’ve learned to enjoy some pretty great things with Mayo on them.  I think that, in your work life, you’ll be able to do the same.  Don’t dig your heels into the ground, open up and enjoy!
